Movement for Green
Bulgaria /MGB/
is a non-governmental, environment protection organization
established in 2004 by Bulgarian scientists, public figures,
intellectuals and students. Among the establishers are: Professor,
Ph.D. Yanko Ivanov –Vice Chair of Executive committee of European
commission FMD (FAO) and team leader EU funded project for animal
identification in Serbia, Professor Ph.D. Bojidar Galutsov – Sofia
University, head of Biophysics and Radiobiology Department, Prof.
Dr. Mladen Grigorov – cardiologist, Medical Academy, Prof. Boris
Karadimchev – composed, Milan Valkov – Chair of the Union of
Bulgarian Journalists, Stefka Yanorova – actress, and others.
Movement for Green
Bulgaria
is incorporated under the Bulgarian laws as a non-profit
organization to the public benefit.
The
Management Board consists of: Chair - Professor, Ph.D. of Law
Lubomir Mechkarov, Instructor in Environmental Law – Sofia
University “St. Kliment Ohridsky”, Deputy Chair – Dr. Boyko Bonev,
Associate Professor at Dental Faculty, Medical University Sofia,
Deputy Chair – Olya Todorova, an economist, „Ecoinvest corp.”
consortium.
Movement
for Green Bulgaria
has an established Civil Council, whose member are people known in
Bulgaria – public figures, writers, actors, artists, physicians,
etc., among whom: Nedyalko Yordanov – writer, Stoyanka Mutafova –
actress, Georgi Kaloyanchev – actor, Prof. Raicho Dimkov, Sofia
University, Head of Hydrology and Ichthyology Department, Biology
faculty, Chair of the Union of Biologists in Bulgaria, Associate
Professor Maleev – Director of the Land and People National Museum,
etc. Chair of the Civil council of Movement for Green Bulgaria is
Academician Tsvetan Tsvetkov, Chair of the Bulgarian Agricultural
Academy.
Some 600
active members in 45 settlements throughout Bulgaria cooperate to
Movement for Green Bulgaria, the activity is directed from a main
office in Sofia with 10 employees.
Among
the working priorities of the
Movement for Green
Bulgaria
are industrial pollutions, waters, sewerage and water treatment
stations, urban pollutions, waste landfills, treatment of waste,
recultivation, eco-information and eco-education, eco-tourism, etc,
as detailed in the Green Book of Bulgaria.
The Green
Book of Bulgaria is the first large-scale initiative of the Movement
for Green Bulgaria. It collected information all over the country on
environmental problems by regions. The Book was handed to the
President, the Prime Minister, and the Chair of the National
Assembly of Republic of Bulgaria. MGB aimed at permanently drawing
the attention of the main Bulgarian institutions to the
environmental problems of Bulgaria. The Book is supplemented and
updated every year.
Movement
for Green Bulgaria
elaborated and
introduced into the 39th National Assembly a Memorandum with demands
for amendments of some act in the following areas:
· Amendment of
the statutory regulations for the purpose of ensuring legal
guarantees for citizen access to information on the environmental
situation.
· Access to
justice administration on environmental issues, since under the
legal regulations of Bulgaria, it is difficult for citizens to
legally oppose actions or omissions to act by government bodies,
legal and natural persons, which have adverse environmental
consequences for the public as a whole.
Movement for Green
Bulgaria organized a national conference entitled “Protection or
Salvation of Bulgarian Environment on the Road to the EU”, involving
leading scientists in the area of Environmental Science, Members of
Parliament, government employees, etc.
Active
members and experts from Movement for Green Bulgaria stopped
productions that are dangerous for the peoples’ health. There were
ensured new protection measures against radioactive waste at some
depots in the country. There were organized mass protests of the
citizens of the capital against the illegal dung – hills. They
stopped a concession for inert materials over Mesta river valley,
breaking the transborder water cooperation wit Republic of Greece
and they ensure supportive environmental events for investors that
contaminate environment.
Movement for Green Bulgaria
is involved in the work of the Ministry of State Policy on Disasters
and Accidents, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of the
Interior, Ministry of Health Care and others, through expert and
public councils, work groups, and joint committees, for a more
complete meeting of the environmental policy criteria of the state
administration in Bulgaria’s application for EU membership.
Movement for Green Bulgaria
states its wish to be involved in the implementation of
international eco-projects, on a national and regional scale, and
expects support for its two main national campaigns beginning in
2006:
· National
Program “Measures Combating Flood Effects and Prevention” in
Republic of Bulgaria;
· National
Program for increase in the use of methane as environmentally clean
fuel – “Fill methane”
